This week, San Francisco voters had several ballot measures to decide on, including two
that would expand police powers and require drug screening for individuals receiving cash assistance from the county (San Francisco is a consolidated city-county).
Voters approved propositions E and F. Prop. E passed with 60% of voters voting in favor and was an expansion of police powers within the city. Here are the proposition's key provisions:
Reduced reporting requirements for when police use force
Allowing body camera footage to replace written reports in specific incidents
Authorization of the use of drones with facial recognition technology
Reduced oversight for the installation of surveillance cameras by the police department
Provides police greater leeway to pursue suspects in vehicles
Prop. F passed with 63% of voters voting in favor and would require adults without dependents receiving cash assistance to undergo drug screening. If found to be using illegal drugs, recipients would be required to meet with an addiction specialist and participate in a drug treatment program to continue receiving benefits.
Both measures were supported by Mayor London Breed (D) who heads into a crowded reelection fight this November and marks a more conservative shift by the city's traditionally liberal voters.
