The sports betting industry is now in its sixth year of legalized and regulated operations outside the state of Nevada. So far it’s prospering - with New Jersey overtaking Nevada in sports betting handles and revenues in April 2021.
New York is also closing the gap with its unprecedented growth since the legalization of its online industry in January of 2022. Currently, the top five markets for sports betting (measured by overall handle and revenue) are:
New Jersey
Nevada
New York
Illinois
Pennsylvania
Virtual sports betting, legal in 29 states and Washington D.C., is also expected to grow with six state legislatures considering legislation or voter referendums scheduled to legalize the industry:
Minnesota
Oklahoma
Georgia
Alabama
Mississippi
Missouri
With the rapid growth of sports betting nationwide, we can expect new legislation to expand and further regulate this booming industry.
The PoliciPro team is monitoring the status of legislation and initiatives to legalize virtual sports betting and will provide monthly updates to our readers.
