The commercial gaming industry continued to set records, with Q2 revenue growing by 9.8% when compared to last year.

Tribal operators also broke records, with the National Indian Gaming Commission (NIGC) reporting a record $3.9 billion in gaming revenue for FY2024.

Sweepstakes casinos continue to face legislative challenges, with New Jersey officially banning them and a bill advancing in California with the same goal.

Here are the latest updates impacting the gaming industry.

Sports Betting

  • On August 15th, the Missouri Gaming Commission selected Circa Sports and DraftKings to receive two of the state's untethered mobile sports betting licenses.

  • On August 18th, Robinhood announced that it will now offer NFL and college football predictions. The announcement follows the company's filed lawsuits against Nevada and New Jersey gaming regulators.

Taxes & Revenue

  • Commercial gaming revenue growth for the 2nd quarter grew by 9.8% year-over-year. Q2 was the 18th consecutive growth quarter with a total GGR of 19.44 billion for all gaming verticals.

  • On July 31st, the National Indian Gaming Commission (NIGC) reported $43.9 billion in gross gaming revenue (GGR) for FY 2024, an all-time high and 4.6% growth when compared to last year.

Casinos

  • In Pennsylvania, SB840 advanced to the state House Appropriations Committee, which would reduce the minimum slot machine requirements for racetracks (category 1) and stand-alone (category 2) casinos from 1,500 to 1,000. The change would enable operators to become more competitive by providing additional space for non-gaming activities.

  • A Sacramento judge delayed ruling on whether California tribes can sue state cardrooms under SB549, citing possible conflicts with federal gaming law, and set the next hearing for October 10.

  • Dozens of community members testified in support of Resorts World’s casino bid in Queens at a public advisory hearing on August 20th. Other downstate New York casino proposals have faced backlash and limited support from their respective community members.

iGaming

  • New Jersey became the latest state to ban online sweepstakes casinos. Gov Phil Murphy signed A5447 and S4282 on August 15th.

  • On August 18th, AB831, which would ban sweepstakes casinos in California, advanced further in the State Assembly.
